The symbol for Christianity is the cross. Most (if not all) Christian churches have at least one large on outside and many inside. Pretty simple design really, regardless of the materials. It's just 2 straight lines. To manufacture one should not be too difficult. What if, back in Christ's day hanging was the prefered method of execuction? Would then a noose be the symbol for Christianity? Just think how much more complicated to produce these would be. A cross is simple to do in a neon sign. A noose just wouldn't turn out as well. You have the knot and maybe even the rope texture.
In no way am I being sacriligeous. I am just looking at this from a manufacturing point of view.

The story is that Constantine had a vision saying "In this sign conquer", which led him to use the sign as his standard in battle and capture the Imperial throne, thus suggesting to him that maybe becoming a Christian might be a good thing.
However, I think there is some dispute as to whether it was a cross (which form) or the Chi Rho (looks like an Xed out P).
As for what the intentions of those who chose the symbol were: such things are not clear to me. Very little is clear to me when speaking of the intentions of other people, especially those who lived long ago in circumstances very different from mine. I prefer not to be so certain and to speak only of my own motives (& even those are not always known to me).
That a certain decision results in a thing used abusively is not certain evidence that such abuse was the intention of the original decision-makers.
